Prof. Dr. Hanitzsch
Professor Thomas Hanitzsch and his colleagues focus on a range of topics in the broader area of journalism studies, emphasizing an international and comparative perspective. In a broader interdisciplinary context, the members of this research and teaching unit explore issues at the intersection between communication research, political science, sociology and social psychology. Research projects centre on the current, and partly dramatic, transformation of journalism throughout the world. In addition, a number of studies focus on the comparative analysis of journalism cultures around the globe and investigate issues related to conflict coverage, lifestyle journalism, celebrity news, and tabloid journalism. Other studies pertain to the role of journalism in identity construction, trust building, political communication, collective memory and public discourse on migration. Together with their students, Professor Hanitzsch and colleagues are using a wide array of research methods, both quantitative and qualitative, including interviews, content analyses, experiments, and ethnographic analyses.
